PlayStation says Ghost of Tsushima is selling out in Japan
Sucker Punch title has ‘exceeded expectations’
PlayStation has said Ghost of Tsushima has exceeded sales expectations in Japan and warned consumers of potential stock shortages.
In a statement posted on Twitter, PlayStation Japan said that production of additional Ghost of Tsushima stock was underway and urged fans to consider purchasing the digital version of the game.
The PS4 exclusive released last week and is only the third Western-developed game to receive a perfect 40/40 score from Japan’s Famitsu magazine (the others were Grand Theft Auto V and Elder Scrolls IV: Skyrim).
Last year another PlayStation exclusive, Kojima Productions’ Death Stranding, enjoyed the biggest launch for a new IP in Japan this console generation, beating the likes of Judgement, Sekiro and Bloodborne.
No sales data has been released for Japan this week, but the Sucker Punch title has enjoyed a strong start in the UK where Tsushima comfortably reached No. 1 in the boxed sales chart.
According to GfK data published by GI.biz, the action game didn’t come close to matching last month’s The Last of Us: Part 2. However, its boxed launch sales were 7% higher than last year’s new PS4 IP Days Gone, which is a more comparable product.
In VGC’s Ghost of Tsushima review, our critic said the “Kurosawa homage forges its own identity, but is weighed down by the genre’s more perfunctory tropes”.
The game is available to purchase at Amazon, Best Buy and Game, among other retailers.
