German and Austrian users affected due to “evolving licensing agreements”

PlayStation is removing purchased StudioCanal content from owners’ video libraries

Sony Interactive Entertainment has confirmed plans to remove previously purchased video content from the video libraries of some PlayStation users.

As spotted by FlatpanelsHD, the decision will impact German and Austrian users who purchased StudioCanal content via the PlayStation Store.

314 pieces of video content will be removed in Germany and 137 will be removed in Austria next month, Sony said in a legal notice posted on PlayStation’s website in both countries.

“As of August 31, 2022, due to our evolving licensing agreements with content providers, you will no longer be able to view your previously purchased StudioCanal content and it will be removed from your video library,” reads a translation of the message.

Last March, Sony announced that the PlayStation Store would stop offering TV and movie content for purchase or rental on August 31, 2021. However, it said existing purchases would still be available to access.

SIE’s head of video business Vanessa Lee said at the time that the decision was driven by the growth of streaming services on PS4 and PS5.

“When this change takes effect, users can still access movie and TV content they have purchased through PlayStation Store for on-demand playback on their PS4, PS5 and mobile devices,” Lee said.

VGC has asked Sony about its decision to remove previously purchased content from users’ video libraries and whether it will affect players outside of Germany and Austria too.

Sony released a new PS5 system software update earlier today, introducing auto low latency mode settings.
