PlayStation 5 at retail
ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: In late September, US retailer Best Buy sold limited quantities of PS5 and Xbox Series X consoles in stores for the first time this year, attracting large queues at numerous locations.
Last week, market research firm the NPD Group said PS5 had ended Nintendo Switch’s long-running streak as the US market’s best-selling console.
Prior to September, Nintendo’s system was the best-selling console in the US for a record 33 consecutive months based on units sold.
But PS5 took the crown in both unit and dollar sales last month after Sony was able to make “a big number” of the supply constrained console available to consumers, according to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella.
Despite some recent signs of increased availability, PS5 is expected to remain hard to come by for some time yet given ongoing challenges caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
US-based consumers hoping to purchase a PS5 console can now register their interest directly with Sony for a chance to do so. The company is making a limited number of PS5 consoles available for customers in the US to purchase directly from PlayStation this holiday season.
Sony Interactive Entertainment will stream a new State of Play presentation on October 27. Kicking off at 2pm PT / 5pm ET / 10pm UK and lasting for about 20 minutes, the broadcast will focus on announcements and updates for third-party games coming to PS5 and PS4.
Earlier today, PlayStation studio Guerrilla Games detailed a number of the new abilities, weapons and tools protagonist Aloy has at her disposal in the upcoming Horizon Forbidden West.
