Speaking about the company’s development ambitions in VGC’s Platinum Games interview, the executive praised the work Respawn has done in the space with Apex Legends and said Platinum Games would need to put a unique spin on the formula if it was to enter the fray.

“It’s a very interesting genre,” he said. “Quite frankly, I personally think it would be interesting to see what sort of take we could have on it.

“We wouldn’t want to make something that was just shooting. With Apex Legends the quality bar is so high that we wouldn’t want to go in that direction.

“Trying to come up with something that’s our taste in that genre could be very interesting,” he added.

Elsewhere in the interview, Inaba spoke about Platinum’s decision to move towards self-publishing with its two new in-development game IPs.

“Right now we’re in the middle of designing something that has never been done before,” he claimed of one of the projects. “I know a lot of people say that, but the game we’re working on truly is unlike anything else.

“Even for our varied history of veteran game developers, this is something that has never been designed before,” he reiterated. “So from a game design perspective, we’re very excited right now.”
