PlatinumGames has seemingly revealed the next entry in its Neo-Classic Arcade series

PlatinumGames appears to have revealed the second entry in its retro-themed Neo-Classic Arcade series.

In a video (below) published to coincide with the start of April Fool’s Day in Japan, the studio showed footage of a psychedelic side-scrolling shooter starring virtual YouTuber Shirogane Pt and told fans to stay tuned for more news on the upcoming game.

The first game in the Neo-Classic Arcade series, Sol Cresta, was revealed on April Fool’s Day 2020, leading many to believe it was a joke announcement rather than an actual game.

However, Platinum later confirmed that the game was indeed a real product and the first part in a planned series.

Sol Cresta was released for PS4, Switch and PC in February 2022, and on April Fool’s Day last year Platinum appeared to announce that it was working on nine more games in its retro-themed series.

In an announcement video clearly designed to look like an April Fool’s joke, Platinum co-founder Hideki Kamiya, dressed in costume, said the series of games would be referred to as the “Shocking 10”.

Speaking to VGC in a PlatinumGames interview published in September 2021, Kamiya said Sol Cresta was just the first game in the studio’s planned Neo-Classic Arcade line.

“The idea behind it is not looking at a specific IP or game, but taking that feel of those older games of the 8-bit and 16-bit era and bring back the days where you really had to find the fun and didn’t have all the bells and whistles that we have these days,” he explained.

“We have the technology now to improve on some of those ideas or maybe realise some pillars that weren’t possible back then, but you still have the gameplay and core mechanics.

“So you have the classic game and add ‘neo’ elements. We might look at side-scrolling shooting, beat-em-ups and other older genres and incorporate those new ideas.”
