Persona 5 Royal PS4 owners won’t be able to upgrade to the PS5 version
The game is also coming to PC, Switch and Xbox consoles in October
Atlus has confirmed that there’s no upgrade path for PS4 owners of Persona 5 Royal who want to play the upcoming PS5 version.
The enhanced version of the popular JRPG Persona 5 was released for PS4 in Japan in 2019 and worldwide in March 2020.
Persona 5 Royal will be released for PS5, Xbox Series One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch and PC on October 21, 2022.
But in an FAQ on the game’s Japanese website, publisher Atlus said PS4 owners who want to play the enhanced version on PS5 will need to purchase it again.
“We are sorry, but there are no products for PlayStation 4 purchasers of Persona 5 Royal for this title,” reads a loose translation.
“We would appreciate it if you could purchase Persona 5 Royal for PlayStation 5, when you play the game on PlayStation 5.”
Naturally, the PlayStation 4 version of Persona 5 Royal will still be playable on the PlayStation 5, given the system’s backwards compatibility with last-gen titles.
Persona 5 Royal is an enhanced version of 2016’s Persona 5 featuring additional characters and gameplay features, plus graphical improvements and new music.
PC, PlayStation, Switch, Xbox and Game Pass releases for Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden and Persona 5 Royal were confirmed in June.
Following Persona 5 Royal’s October release, Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden will arrive in 2023.
Unlike Persona 5 Royal, Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden will be released for PS4 rather than PS5, according to Atlus.
