Onimusha Way of the Sword coming in 2026

Onimusha Way of the Sword has been announced.

Developed by Capcom, the game is due for release in 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.

A gameplay trailer for the game, viewable below, was also shown off as part of the reveal.

“Onimusha: Way of the Sword takes place in Kyoto during the early Edo period,” Capcom’s description of the new game reads.

“In this time of relative peace for Japan, Malice has befallen the ancient city. Twisted into an eerie and unsettling place, Kyoto has been infested by the demonic Genma.

“In the debut trailer for Onimusha: Way of the Sword, a lone samurai armed with the Oni Gauntlet engages in fierce, blood-soaked sword fights with these hellish creatures from another world.”

The Onimusha series was developed by Capcom, with the first game in the series, Onimusha: Warlords, releasing in 2001.

The series saw consistent releases in the early 2000s, however, in recent years the series has been largely dormant outside of a remake of the first game in 2019.

The series follows figures and battles from Japanese history, with the early games being based largely on the Sengoku period. The games are mostly action-adventure titles.

The first game in the series, Onimusha: Warlords was received warmly at the time by critics, with the PS2 version achieving a 86 on review aggregator Metacritic.
