Obsidian apologises for Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition performance issues

An Obsidian representative has apologised to players frustrated with The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition performance issues.

The updated version of the studio’s 2019 game was announced last week and released on Tuesday for PS5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.

At the time of its reveal, publisher Private Division said Spacer’s Choice Edition features higher resolution graphics, a dynamic weather system, overhauled lighting and environments, improved performance and load times, enhanced details on characters, and an increased level cap.

Update

Private Division has said: “Our team is working on a patch for PC and consoles to address many of the visual and performance issues being reported by players. We appreciate your patience greatly and will be able to share this and the full list of patch notes with you before the end of next week.”

But the game has been poorly received by players on all platforms, with numerous users complaining that it performs significantly worse than the original title.

“I am sorry that you all have been experiencing performance issues with The Outer Worlds: Spacer’s Choice Edition,” an Obsidian player support representative wrote on Reddit.

“I understand how frustrating this can be, and I assure you the team at Private Division is working on getting a patch out as soon as possible.”

They added: “If you run into any other issues while playing the game, please feel free to submit a support ticket to Private Division. They are the dedicated support for The Outer Worlds, and we’re doing our best to funnel all of the information to them, so they can find solutions as quickly as possible.”

Spacer’s Choice Edition includes The Outer Worlds base game and both its narrative expansions, Murder on Eridanos and Peril on Gorgon, for $59.99 / £49.99.

Players who already own the game and both DLC packs for Xbox One, PS4 or PC can upgrade to the Spacer’s Choice Edition for $9.99 / £5.

Take-Two reportedly laid off staff at several divisions this week, including its indie publishing label Private Division.

Microsoft, which acquired Obsidian in November 2018, has said it hopes to build The Outer Worlds into an “enduring franchise”.

And in June 2021, Obsidian announced The Outer Worlds 2 for Xbox Series X/S and PC with a comedic trailer indicating the game was nowhere near ready.
