Nintendo Switch records the highest August dollar sales for a console in US history
While Madden NFL 21 tops the monthly software chart
Nintendo Switch recorded the highest August dollar sales for a hardware platform in US history last month, according to the NPD Group.
NPD analyst Mat Piscatella said Switch dollar sales in August 2020 beat the previous record set by Nintendo Wii in August 2008.
Nintendo’s latest console has enjoyed strong sales throughout 2020. In the US, between January and April, Switch broke the all-time record for dollar sales. And the following month, Switch unit sales were the highest for an individual platform in a May month since the Nintendo DS in May 2009.
In its March report, NPD also said Switch set a new all-time record for hardware unit sales in a March month, and recorded the strongest first quarter unit sales of any platform since the DS in 2010.
In the UK, Switch hardware sales more than doubled in the first half of 2020 compared to the first six months of 2019.
NPD also said on Monday that Madden NFL 21 topped August’s US software sales chart, marking the 21st consecutive year that a Madden NFL title has been the best-selling game in its release month. Madden NFL is the best-selling sports game franchise and the third best-selling franchise overall in US history.
Analyst Piscatella also noted that August’s sixth best-selling game, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, is now that 10th best-selling game on Nintendo platforms in US tracked history.
Last week Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma said fans will need to “wait a bit longer” for Nintendo to provide new updates on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2.
It was recently claimed by two publications that Nintendo is planning to launch a ‘Switch Pro’ model in early 2021.
