Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X/S dominated UK Black Friday console sales

Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X/S led UK game console sales over the Black Friday period.

In terms of unit sales, Switch accounted for 42% of all consoles sold last week, ahead of Xbox Series X/S (40%) and PS5 (18%).

That’s according to data from retail tracker GfK Entertainment, which was published on GamesIndustry.biz.

Switch sales were boosted by the return of a Mario Kart 8 hardware bundle, while some retailers also cut the Switch OLED price to £279 on Black Friday.

Xbox sales were driven by the heavily discounted Series S console, which was available for £190 last week, representing a £60 saving on its regular price.

While PS5 trailed its rivals in terms of unit sales, it’s worth noting that it has a relatively high retail price and it didn’t receive the same level of discounts as some other consoles. GfK didn’t provide any sales data based on revenue generated.

Overall consumer spending on game hardware, physical games and accessories during Black Friday week in the UK were up 4% compared to 2021, but last week only ranked as eighth biggest of the 10 Black Fridays tracked by GfK.

The retail monitor also said that physical sales of Sonic Frontiers and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe more than doubled last week in the UK thanks to Black Friday sales.
