Nintendo Switch and Mario Maker 2 top US sales in June
Plus Crash Team Racing sets franchise launch record
Nintendo Switch continued to lead US hardware sales in June, while the console’s latest exclusive Super Mario Maker 2 took the top spot on the monthly software chart, according to data from market research firm the NPD Group.
According to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, Super Mario Maker 2 set a new record high for launch month sales of a Mario Maker title, surpassing both the September 2015 release of Super Mario Maker and the December 2016 release of Super Mario Maker 3DS.
Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled was the US’s second best-selling game in June, with launch sales topping the franchise’s previous record debut set by Crash Bandicoot: N. Sane Trilogy in June 2017 (although that title initially launched only on PS4).
Mortal Kombat 11 was the third best-selling game of June and remains the best-selling game of 2019 to date in the US. Kingdom Hearts III was the second best-selling game of 2019’s first half.
According to NPD, overall sales of tracked video game software totalled $386 million in June 2019, down 1 percent when compared to a year ago.
Year-to-date dollar sales of tracked video game software have increased 2 percent, to $2.6 billion.
Hardware spending in June 2019 totalled $235 million, down 33% from the same period in 2018, with Nintendo Switch the only platform showing year-on-year growth.
Year-to-date hardware spending has declined 20 percent versus year ago, to $1.3 billion.
