Ninja Gaiden 4 is in development, Xbox has confirmed.

The game is a collaboration between Team Ninja and PlatinumGames and will be published by Xbox Game Studios Publishing, with a release planned for Fall 2025 on Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC. The game will also be available on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, a remaster of the Xbox 360 game, also released today in a surprise release. Ninja Gaiden 2 Black is dubbed the “definitive version” of the game, and is available today on Xbox Series X/S, as well as Xbox Game Pass.

Ninja Gaiden 4 will be the first main entry in the Ninja Gaiden series since Ninja Gaiden 3, which was released on Xbox 360 and PS3 in 2012.

The game will feature a new protagonist, called Yakumo, and will be “set in a fresh world where players can immerse themselves in a brand new experience”. The game will still feature series regular Ryu Hayabusa, who “will play a pivotal role in the story”.

Gaiden 4 is set in a Tokyo “drastically transformed by the influence of the underworld”, and according to its creators, difficulty with be influenced by Ninja Gaiden 2, but balanced so that players don’t feel like they’re at an unfair advantage.

“We are staying true to the challenge and deep action that defines the Ninja Gaiden series, while incorporating the speed and dynamic expression of PlatinumGames,” said Platinum director and producer Yuji Nakao. “We are putting all our efforts into making this a true mainline sequel that continues to evolve the series.”

He added: “The game is currently about 70–80% complete, and we’ve entered the polishing phase. We’ll continue to work closely with Team Ninja, ensuring every detail meets the expectations of fans. There’s more information coming that will help you understand just how fun and exciting this game is, so please stay tuned. As both a fan and a developer, I’ll do my utmost to deliver an experience that satisfies everyone.”
