Nike and Fortnite collaboration teases ‘the ultimate sneakerhunt’

Nike is teasing an upcoming Fortnite collaboration that will reportedly offer special rewards to members of its new NFT platform .Swoosh.

The Fortnite X Nike Air Max event promises to deliver “the ultimate sneakerhunt” when it launches on June 20, according to social media posts from the sportswear giant.

While the event has yet to be officially detailed, Fortnite leaker HYPEX claims the collaboration will offer an “immersive, and first-of-it’s-kind Air Max themed experience” made by Nike in Unreal Editor for Fortnite.

It will reportedly feature Nike designed skins, cosmetics, and special rewards for .Swoosh members.

Update

The Nike x Fortnite Airphoria collaboration has officially launched and an Epic Games spokesperson has told VGC it doesn’t feature any NFTs.

“Epic’s partnership with Nike and the launch of ‘Airphoria’ is one of many future collaborations enabling players to opt in to connecting their online presence across ecosystems,” they said. “This is all part of a larger effort to bring Nike’s Air Max brand into the world of Fortnite with cosmetics, Fortnite islands, and account linking between Nike and Epic, introducing Nike .SWOOSH achievement badges for players who link accounts.

“The connection between Fortnite and Nike doesn’t integrate any NFTs or digital item trading marketplaces into the Fortnite world or its economy. Items recognized across these two ecosystems are purely for the enjoyment of the purchaser, and aren’t tradeable, transferrable, or sellable, as has always been the case in the Fortnite economy.”

.Swoosh launched in closed beta in November 2022. Nike bills it as “a web3-enabled platform that champions athletes and serves the future of sport by creating a new, inclusive digital community and experience and a home for Nike virtual creations”.

It released its first NFT sneaker collection in May and it has surpassed $1 million in sales.

Earlier this month, Nike announced it had struck a deal with Electronic Arts that will see “virtual creations” from .Swoosh integrated into future EA Sports games.

“Nike’s new partnership with EA Sports will look to build new immersive experiences and unlock brand new levels of customization within the EA Sports ecosystem,” it said.

“In future EA Sports titles, EA Sports and Nike plan to make select .Swoosh virtual creations available allowing members and players unique new opportunities for self-expression and creativity through sport and style.”

In a follow-up statement issued to IGN, EA said it isn’t planning to offer NFTs as part of the deal.

“EA Sports is not offering NFTs,” a spokesperson said. “We’re collaborating with Nike to look at how we can bring their unique .Swoosh digital items into future EA Sports experiences with unique player utility.”
