New Switch system update improves stability and updates banned words list
Version 17.0.0 is available to download now
Nintendo has rolled out a new Switch firmware update.
The version 17.0.0 update is covered in a single patch note on Nintendo’s support site.
According to platform holder, the update features “general system stability improvements to enhance the user’s experience.”
Dataminer OatmealDome, who frequently compares system updates to identify what has actually changed, said: “Pretty much every system component was updated. This is normal for major updates, as the entire OS is rebuilt with a newer SDK version.”
They also noted that the patch updated the console’s internal list of banned words, among other changes.

During its latest quarterly financial results briefing in August, Nintendo said Switch’s global lifetime sales stood at 129.53 million by the mid-point of 2023.
Nintendo expects to sell 15 million Switch consoles during the current fiscal year ending in March 2024, which would represent a 16.5% year-over-year decline, and has said it will continue supporting the console with new games next fiscal year.
Nintendo is yet to officially comment on plans for its next console. However, according to VGC sources, the company has dispatched Switch 2 development kits to key partners, with a launch planned for the second half of 2024.
The platform holder also showed off tech demos for its Nintendo Switch successor behind closed doors at Gamescom, it’s understood.
