New Returnal trailer focuses on the PS5 exclusive’s shape-shifting world
Atropos changes each time the game’s protagonist dies
Sony Interactive Entertainment has released a new trailer for PlayStation 5 exclusive Returnal.
Developed by Resogun and Super Stardust studio Housemarque, the original sci-fi IP is a third-person roguelike shooter “designed for extreme replayability”.
The new trailer focus on Atropos, a world which changes each time the game’s protagonist Selene dies.
“After crash-landing on this shape-shifting world, Selene must search through the barren landscape of an ancient civilization for her escape,” reads a game overview on PlayStation’s website.
“Isolated and alone, she finds herself fighting tooth and nail for survival. Again and again, she’s defeated – forced to restart her journey every time she dies.
“Through relentless roguelike gameplay, you’ll discover that just as the planet changes with every cycle, so do the items at your disposal. Every loop offers new combinations, forcing you to push your boundaries and approach combat with a different strategy each time.”
In January, Sony delayed the Returnal release date by a little over a month to April 30, 2021 “in order to give the team extra time to continue to polish the game to the level of quality players expect from Housemarque”.
Returnal could feature during a PlayStation State of Play presentation on February 25. Lasting for about 30 minutes, it promises to provide “new updates and deep dives for 10 games coming to PS4 and PS5″.
