Sonic Prime will consist of 24 episodes and premiere in 2022
Netflix has announced a new Sonic the Hedgehog 3D animated series.
Titled Sonic Prime, the 24-episode family-friendly series will premiere worldwide in 2022.
It’s billed as “a high-octane adventure where the fate of a strange new multiverse” rests in Sonic’s hands, as well as “a journey of self-discovery and redemption”.
Canadian production company WildBrain will animate the series at its Vancouver studio, with Sonic Prime’s showrunners and executive producers coming from Man of Action Entertainment (Ben 10, Big Hero 6).
Publisher Sega previously promised to mark Sonic’s 30th anniversary this year with the release of new games and some major announcements.
On Monday, the company claimed that over 1.14 billion Sonic game units have been sold and downloaded since the series debuted in 1991.
Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka announced at SXSW Gaming 2019 that production on the next major Sonic the Hedgehog title was underway.
Paramount Pictures is also planning to release Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in cinemas in 2022.
The first Sonic The Hedgehog film enjoyed a record opening for a video game movie following its February 2020 release.
The live action film sees Sonic (voiced by Ben Schwartz) and his best friend Tom (James Marsden) team up to save the planet from evil genius Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey).
It went on to gross almost $320 million at cinemas worldwide, making it the sixth-highest grossing film of 2020, according to Box Office Mojo.
