Naughty Dog says it’s ‘aggressively hiring’ for its new ‘cinematic’ multiplayer game
Standalone game will bring ‘a cinematic experience between players’ says director
The Last of Us developer Naughty Dog says it’s “agressively hiring” for its new standalone multiplayer game and promised a “cinematic” experience similar to its single-player blockbusters.
The Sony studio posted a dozen job openings for the multiplayer project on its social media account on Friday, covering multiple disciplines including programming, design and art.
Commenting on the job roles, The Last of Us Part 2’s co-director Vinit Agarwal wrote: “We’re aggressively hiring – apply if you want to be part of bringing the cinematic experience between players in our new standalone multiplayer action game.”
Little has been officially revealed on the multiplayer project, but the job descriptions posted this week state that Naughty Dog is “seeking to bring the same level of ambition and quality of our signature, story-driven games to this unique multiplayer project.”
An open position for a systems designer calls for an individual able to design and balance gameplay systems “such as player abilities and weapons”, as well as “combat encounter objectives and dynamic events”.
It’s likely that the multiplayer title is The Last of Us 2’s delayed Factions multiplayer mode, which has possibly been expanded into a full standalone title.
The job ads also match with comments made by PlayStation Studios boss Herman Hulst in June, who hinted at a narrative-driven online experience coming from PlayStation. “Who says that multiplayer experience cannot have great stories, right?” He said.
More recently, multiplayer assets reportedly buried in The Last of Us Part 2 files appeared to offer clues as to Naughty Dog’s plans for its upcoming Factions sequel, including a possible battle royale mode.
Content creator Speclizer, who specialises in “modding and exploration” videos, claimed to have unearthed various leftover multiplayer assets, most notably a map prop which would have been used in multiplayer.
The locations, which include Adler Park, Camallito and Port of Camallito, suggest it would have been made up of several single player areas merged together to create a map large enough to host a battle royale mode, with points of interest including Motel, Gas Station and Estate.
