Modern Warfare multiplayer is ‘most played of this generation’
Activision claims record player engagement as new free content is released
Activision says Modern Warfare’s multiplayer component is the most played at launch of any Call of Duty game this generation.
More than 500 million multiplayer hours were played across almost 300 million online matches in the first 50 days following the game’s release, representing the highest level of player engagement in six years, according to the publisher.
For the first time in the series PC and console players can play together online via cross-platform play, while the game ditched the franchise’s traditional season pass model in favour of a new Battle Pass system accompanied by a significant amount of free post-launch content.
Activision also said this week that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has generated over $1 billion in sell-through worldwide since its October 25 release.
A Modern Warfare update released on Wednesday introduced new maps, a fresh game mode and new Spec Ops experiences.
It includes updated versions of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare multiplayer maps Shipment and Vacant, while new multiplayer mode Crank is described as “a fast-paced, high octane Deathmatch where players race against the clock to get kills or suffer an explosive fate”.
Modern Warfare double weapon XP will be available for 72 hours beginning at 10am PT / 1pm ET / 6pm UK on December 20.
