Minecraft Super Smash Bros. Ultimate reveal causes Twitter to crash

Steve and Alex from Minecraft will be added to Nintendo’s game alongside a new stage and music

Nintendo revealed on Thursday that the next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC is a Minecraft’s crossover – an announcement which seemingly caused Twitter to crash.

The social network went down temporarily as soon as the crossover was revealed in a short video presentation, which can be viewed above.

Steve and Alex from Minecraft will be added to Smash Bros. Ultimate alongside a new stage and seven music tracks from Microsoft‘s series.

Series director Masahiro Sakurai mentioned Twitter crashing in a message following the announcement.

Today’s reveal was followed by a video message from Sakurai, who said that a more detailed broadcast discussing the upcoming content will take place on October 3 at 7.30am PT/10.30am ET/3.30pm UK. This “deep dive” into the DLC will also include a release date announcement, Nintendo has confirmed.

Steve and Alex will be available to players who purchase Smash Bros. Ultimate’s second Fighters Pass for $29.99/£26.99/€29.99 or Challenger Pack 7 separately for $5.99/£5.39/€5.99.

In June Ultimate released its seventh DLC fighter, Min Min from Arms, and following Steve and Alex from Minecraft, there are four more characters planned as part of the game’s second Fighters Pass.

The following month, Sakurai reiterated that the current DLC Fighters Pass is likely to be the game’s last.

The plan was originally to release all the remaining fighters in 2020. However, it’s been suggested that the coronavirus pandemic may have disrupted the Smash Bros. DLC schedule.

Sakurai has also said he feels there’s “no way” Smash Bros. will be able to have as many fighters or series represented again in future games.
