Minecraft launches for PS5 alongside Hardcore mode and inventory bundles

Microsoft has released the native PS5 version of Minecraft alongside the game’s latest update for all platforms.

The PS5 version of the game is priced at $19.99 / £15.99, although it’s available for free if players already own Minecraft: Bedrock Edition for PS4.

To claim their free digital copy, players simply need to visit the PlayStation Store on PS5. Those who own the disc version of Bedrock Edition for PS4 will need to insert it to play Minecraft on PS5.

“This native version of Minecraft is optimised to take advantage of the PS5’s powerful hardware, so your game will have a greater render distance while still running in 4K resolution and 60 FPS,” Mojang said.

The PS5 version has launched alongside the Bundles of Bravery update. It introduces bundles, which are items that let players store other items inside them, and Hardcore mode.

The game’s toughest survival challenge locks the game’s difficulty to the highest setting. Players have just one life in Hardcore mode and there are no respawns.

Mojang announced last month that it plans to drop PlayStation VR support for Minecraft in early 2025.

It also said it’s planning to release more regular content drops for the game going forward.

“We know that you want new Minecraft content more often, which is why we’re changing our feature development rhythm.

“Instead of providing one free update during the summer, as we’ve done in the past, we’ll now be releasing a number of free game drops throughout the year.

“These game drops will vary in size and will bring you features to explore more frequently.”
