Microsoft acquires Double Fine Productions

Brutal Legend and Psychonauts studio joins the Xbox family

Microsoft has announced that it has acquired Double Fine Productions.

Led by Tim Schafer, San Francisco, California-based Double Fine is the studio behind Brutal Legend, Broken Age and Psychonauts.

Matt Booty, head of Xbox Game Studios, announced the news during the Xbox E3 2019 briefing.

According to financially troubled publisher Starbreeze, Microsoft paid the Swedish company $13.2 million for the Psychonauts 2 publishing rights

In a video released to coincide with the announcement, Schafer discussed the studio’s culture and said “nothing” about Double Fine is going to change following the studio’s acquisition by Microsoft.

He also assured fans the studio will honour backers of its crowdfunded game Psychonauts 2, which is still coming to PC, Mac, Linux and PS4, in addition to Xbox One.

Double Fine released the first Psychonauts 2 first gameplay trailer too, which you can view above.
