Meta Quest 2 gets a permanent price drop to $199 for the 128 GB version
The same headset cost as much as $399 a couple of years ago
Meta has confirmed that it has permanently dropped the price of its entry level Quest 2 headset.
The price of the 128 GB version of the Quest 2 was temporarily dropped to $199 / £199 recently, but Meta has now confirmed that this discount will now be permanent.
When the Quest 2 was originally released in October 2020, it arrived in a 64 GB version for $299 and a 256 GB version for $399.
The following year the 64 GB version was replaced with a 128 GB version for the same $299 price.
However, in 2022 Meta increased the price of the Quest 2 by $100, saying the costs required to make and ship its products had been rising. As such, the 128 GB version increased to $399.
This was reduced back to $299 again in June 2023, to coincide with Meta’s announcement of the Quest 3.
This new drop to $199, then, marks the first time the device’s price has been officially reduced to lower than it was at launch.
“From home fitness to fully immersive gaming to 2D entertainment, Meta Quest 2 is the most affordable way to tap into everything VR has to offer – and we’re doubling down by making our recent price drop permanent,” Meta said in a blog post.
“That means people can jump into VR with a 128GB Quest 2 headset for just $199 USD—no TV, console, battery pack, or wires required.”
Meta released the Quest 2’s successor, the Meta Quest 3, in October 2023.
Costing $499 for the 128 GB version and $649 for the 512 GB version, the Quest 3 features colour passthrough cameras for mixed reality support and an improved per-eye resolution of 2064 x 2208 (versus 1832 x 1920 in the Quest 2).
