Maximilian Dood commissions cel-shaded mod for Marvel vs Capcom Infinite

Prominent content creator Maximilian Dood has commissioned a cel-shaded mod for Marvel Vs Capcom Infinite.

Dood (real name Maximillian Christensen) took to X to announce that he’d commissioned a mod to reskin the 2017 fighting game, to bring its art style closer in line with previous entries in the series.

The mod is being developed @WistfulHopes on X, and the first images and videos of it have been shared online.

“We’re getting close to something that makes me really happy, and hopefully many others who adverted their eyes from MVCI originally,” Christensen wrote on X.

The cel-shaded style is much closer to that of Marvel vs Capcom 3, which was released in 2011.

Marvel vs Capcom Infinite’s original art style was the subject of much criticism when the game first launched. A demo that was released for the game was roundly mocked online for some of the character’s facial expressions.

One image of Chun-Li, originally from the Street Fighter series, quickly became a meme.

The series has been on hiatus following the release of Marvel vs Capcom 3, perhaps due to the complicated rights issues around developing a new game.

Following the acquisition of Marvel by The Walt Disney Company, it was reported that Disney would routinely interfere in Capcom’s development plans.

It’s been claimed that during the development of Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 and later Marvel vs Capcom Infinite, Capcom wasn’t allowed to use characters in the game that weren’t planned for the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
