Max Payne voice actor James McCaffrey has passed away

James McCaffrey, the voice of Max Payne, has passed away at the age of 65.

McCaffrey, who provided the voice of Max Payne for all three games in the series, and also provided his likeness for the character in Max Payne 3, reportedly died on Sunday surrounded by friends and family following a battle with cancer.

As well as his roles as Max Payne, McCaffrey also starred in Remedy‘s game Control, in which he played Federal Bureau of Control director Zachariah Trench.

Most recently, McCaffrey provided the voice of Alex Casey in Alan Wake 2, a character whose physical appearance was portrayed by Remedy’s Sam Lake.

Lake was also the model for Max Payne in the first game, bringing McCaffrey’s involvement with Remedy full circle before his passing.

Actor Kevin Dillon had posted a message on Instagram earlier today, saying: “RIP James McCaffrey, we were lucky to have known you. My best friend, you will be missed.”

It was unclear for a while whether Dillon’s message was genuine, the result of a hack or a misunderstanding following the tragic death of a teenager with a similar name in Ireland.

However, TMZ now reports that the actor has indeed died, following confirmation from a representative who said he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma and passed away on Sunday.

As well as his roles in Remedy’s games, McCaffrey also played Edward Carnby in the 2008 reboot of Alone in the Dark.

He also played one of the main roles in firefighter drama Rescue Me, in which he played the ghost of a deceased firefighter who frequently visited the protagonist in his dreams.
