Marvel Snap is down in the US following the TikTok ban
The collectible card game is another victim of the US’s TikTok ban
Marvel Snap is currently down in the US following the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the decision to ban TikTok. Marvel Snap and TikTok are two of several Byte Dance apps that were taken offline in the US over the weekend.
TikTok’s parent company had previously been ordered to sell off a portion of the hugely popular social networking app in order to continue operations in the US. Byte Dance refused to do this, and now all apps developed by the company, including TikTok, CapCut, Lemon8, and Marvel Snap, are unavailable in the US.
“Unfortunately, Marvel Snap is temporarily unavailable in U.S. app stores and is unavailable to play in the U.S,” wrote developer Second Dinner on X.
“This outage is a surprise to us and wasn’t planned. Marvel Snap isn’t going anywhere. We’re actively working on getting the game up as soon as possible and will update you once we have more to share.”
It’s unclear if there is an exception in the TikTok ban allowing Byte Dance to operate other apps in the territory. The ban is squarely targeted at TikTok, which the US claims is a risk to national security, via providing user data to China. While some US users are able to access the app via a VPN, as of Sunday, the app isn’t functional natively in the country.
The ban comes despite multiple US representatives making accounts on the app and regularly posting in the lead-up to the 2024 election. Some of these same representatives voted to uphold the ban, citing national security issues.
The CEO of TkTok will attend the inauguration of President Trump this week.
Originally released in October 2022 after a period of beta testing, Marvel Snap received critical acclaim and won a number of awards, including Best Mobile Game at The Game Awards, the New York Game Awards, and the D.I.C.E. Awards.
