Mario Kart Tour ‘tops 123 million downloads’ in first month
Mobile game’s launch month reportedly only bettered by Pokémon Go
Mario Kart Tour is estimated to have been downloaded 123.9 million times across iOS and Android devices since its worldwide release on September 25.
The title recorded the second highest launch month downloads of any mobile game in history, according to data from Sensor Tower.
In comparison, record holder Pokémon Go achieved 163 million downloads in its first 30 days, despite receiving a staggered worldwide rollout.
Mario Kart Tour is by far Nintendo’s most successful mobile title in terms of first month installs, registering over 5.5 times as many downloads as Super Mario Run did during its launch month.
The free-to-start racing game is Nintendo’s second highest earning mobile title in terms of first month player spending, grossing $37.4 million compared to the $67.6 million generated by Fire Emblem Heroes during its launch month.
Mario Kart Tour microtransaction mechanics include a gacha-like system for unlocking content, as well as a Gold Pass $4.99/£4.99 monthly subscription service that lets players unlock more in-game rewards. The Gold Pass is available for a two-week free trial period before users are charged.
Nintendo is expected to introduce online Mario Kart Tour multiplayer in a future update.
Call of Duty: Mobile recently broke mobile launch records with over 100 million downloads in the first week following its October 1 release.
