Mario Kart Tour has an optional paid monthly subscription service
Gold Pass helps players unlock more in-game items
Mario Kart Tour includes an optional ‘Gold Pass’ subscription service that helps players unlock more in-game rewards.
The service costs $4.99 / £4.99 per month and includes benefits such as unlockable Gold Gifts (such as Metal Mario or a golden kart), plus access to Gold Challenges and 200cc racers.
A two week free trial for Gold Pass is available for each Nintendo account.
Mario Kart Tour is available for download for free on iOS and Android. Servers for the mobile racer will go live at around 1am PT/10am CEST on Wednesday, September 25.
According to Nintendo, players can unlock new content in a number of ways.
Players earn Grand Stars based on how well they perform in a race. Grand Stars can unlock new cups and Tour Gifts. Tour Gifts include drivers, karts, gliders and more. Only certain unlockables are available via Tour Gifts during each Tour.
Another way to unlock content is via The Pipe, a lootbox-style mechanic which unlocks random content. Rubies are required to use The Pipe, which can be earned by completing races or “other sources.”
Every two weeks a new course and unlockable content will be added based on a real world location, such as London, Tokyo and Paris.
