Mario 35 is officially being replaced by Pac-Man 99 on Switch Online today
Namco classic is Nintendo’s latest last-player-standing retro game
Nintendo has announced Pac-Man 99, its latest last-player-standing retro game set to release on its Switch Online subscription service.
Pac-Man 99 will go live at 6pm PST / 2am BST (08/04), effectively replacing the Super Mario Bros. 35 battle royale game which was removed last week. Another retro knockout game, Tetris 99, is also available through Switch Online.
As its name suggests, Pac-Man 99 has 99 Pac-Man players battling to be the last player standing.
Similar to the classic game, players can eat Power Pellets to turn the ghosts blue and make them vulnerable. This time, when ghosts are eaten they’re sent to opponents’ games as Jammer Pac-Man, a ghost enemy that slows down players.
Players can also summon a Ghost Train to eat long chains of enemies and overwhelm competing players with the resulting Jammer Pac-Man characters sent across.
The game will be free to Switch Online subscribers, though twenty additional themes will be available to purchase, including ones based on Xevious, Galaga and Dig Dug.
Launched in September 2018, the Switch Online service is required to play most Switch games online (Fortnite is a notable exclusion).
Members can also access a growing library of classic NES and SNES games, back up save data online, and receive special offers including free access to Tetris 99.
