Retail leak confirms Luigi is getting the Lego treatment
Lego Luigi figure listed for release in July
A retail listing has seemingly confirmed Lego’s plans to release a Luigi figure to its Lego Super Mario range.
As spotted by The Brick Fan, Amazon China listed Lego Luigi for release on July 9. Just like the flagship Mario figure, Luigi will be able to react to the custom Lego sets and speak dialogue based on the user’s actions.
The listing arrives days after Lego started teasing the Luigi toy. Last week a Twitter user discovered that after leaving their electronic Lego Mario toy to sleep, it would now call out for Luigi.
UPDATE: It’s official.
ORIGINAL STORY CONTINUES: The new feature comes as a result of a firmware update implemented through the official Lego Super Mario App.
Lego itself mentioned the new feature in a reply to a Facebook comment from a user who said her son keeps putting Mario’s trousers on the Bowser Jr figure because he doesn’t have a Luigi toy.
“Now that’s a very creative way to get his missing brother,” the official Lego account replied. “We did notice that Lego Mario has started calling for him, we’re looking into it and hope to have clarity on why this is soon. Stay tuned!”
The first range of Lego Super Mario sets launched in August 2020. As well as the Mario Starter Course, which contains the electronic Mario toy needed to interact with the other courses, other expansion packs featured the likes of Yoshi, Toad and Bowser, but there has been no Luigi figure to date.
The Lego Group stated last month that Super Mario was “one of the company’s most successful theme launches”. The company has previously said it hopes to have a “long and fruitful” relationship with Nintendo.
