Last of Us Part 2 pre-orders ‘tracking ahead of Spider-Man’

Sony claims exclusive is off to a strong start

Last of Us Part 2 pre-orders ‘tracking ahead of Spider-Man’

The Last of Us Part 2 leaks appear to have failed to seriously dent pre-orders for the game.

Major story elements leaked last month via several unauthorised gameplay videos, but anticipation for the game remains high, according to Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan.

He told Cnet that Sony has taken more Last of Us Part 2 pre-orders in Europe than it did for fellow PS4 exclusive Marvel’s Spider-Man at the same point before its September 2018 release.

The best-selling superhero game in US history has sold over 13 million units worldwide, according to Sony.

“We hope this’ll be a defining game for this generation,” Ryan said of The Last of Us Part 2.

Last of Us Part 2 director Neil Druckmann said last month that he was “heartbroken” by the leak, while Sony later claimed to have identified the culprits behind the release of the unathorised footage.

Sony released a 23-minute The Last of Us Part 2 State of Play episode on Wednesday, including over eight minutes of brand new gameplay.

The Last of Us Part 2 release date is now set for June 19.

Sony said on Friday that it will hold a PlayStation 5 digital event on June 4. It will last for more than an hour and offer the first look at PS5 games ahead of the system’s global launch later this year.
