Kingdom Hearts Switch native ports are ‘undecided’, says producer

Kingdom Hearts series producer Ichiro Hazama has revealed that a native port of the Kingdom Hearts games for Nintendo Switch is still “undecided”.

In an interview with Nintendo Life, Hazama responded when prompted as to why the Kingdom Hearts series is receiving cloud versions of the games, rather than native ports.

“Bringing these titles to Nintendo Switch proved to be quite difficult for various reasons, including the storage capacity of the hardware, but we’re excited that we were able to make it happen for the first time ever by utilizing the Cloud service,” he said.

It is unclear whether this is in reference to the storage capacity of the system, or the storage capacity of Nintendo Switch game carts.

On the PlayStation Store, Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 ReMIX lists its minimum storage requirement at 45.24 GBs, far more than the standard 32GB Nintendo Switch internal storage.

When pushed on the issue, Hazama responded that: “At this moment in time, the production of a native version is undecided. We believe that the Cloud version is currently the best way to deliver the Kingdom Hearts series to Nintendo Switch players, but we are always excited to hear feedback from our fans and want to thank them for all their support.”

The announcement of the Kingdom Heart series coming to Nintendo Switch follows the announcement that Sora would be joining the cast of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the final character.

Sora has been highly requested for years and his inclusion makes him the 89th fighter to feature in the game.

“I knew that Sora was the most requested fighter,” Smash Bros. Ultimate director Masahiro Sakurai said, citing a poll that was released when Super Smash Bros was on the Wii U and 3DS. It was decided not to reveal the results at the time, so as not to place extra pressure on Square Enix.

Sora will also be accompanied by a new stage called Rising Falls, which swoops past the Hollow Bastion castle from the series.

Sakurai recently reiterated that the release of the final character would conclude development on the game.
