Josh Sawyer would like to make Pillars of Eternity 3 with ‘a Baldur’s Gate 3 budget’
Given unlimited resources, Obsidian’s design director wouldn’t make Pentiment 2 next
Pentiment director Josh Sawyer has said he’d like to make a third entry in the Pillars of Eternity series if he could secure a budget similar to that of Baldur’s Gate 3.
In an interview with Touch Arcade, Obsidian‘s design director was asked whether he’d make Pentiment 2, Pillars of Eternity 3, or Fallout New Vegas 2 next if he had an unlimited budget, no time limitations and a dream development team.
“I don’t think I’d make Pentiment 2,” Sawyer responded. “I really do feel very satisfied with that game. It’s not like I don’t wanna return to it ever, but I just did it, so I’d probably wait a little bit.
“I think if it truly was an unlimited budget, I think I would try Pillars of Eternity 3 because I know what the budget was for Deadfire, which was not a whole lot and I have heard from multiple people what the budget was for Baldur’s Gate 3, and I’m not gonna talk about numbers, but if I got that budget, sure, I’ll make Pillars 3.”
Xbox-owned Obsidian’s next game, Avowed, will be released in 2024, although it’s not being directed by Sawyer, who also previously worked on the Icewind Dale series, but rose to greater prominence as director of Fallout New Vegas.
“Expanding the universe that we created for the original Pillars of Eternity games, Avowed brings a new perspective, a new way to fight, and a new land to explore in the world of Eora,” Obsidian studio head Feargus Urquhart said earlier this year.
“The Pillars games are near and dear to us and we can’t wait to share Avowed with everyone next year.
“In Avowed, you’ll explore the Living Lands, a plagued, wild island set in the world of Eora. The Living Lands are full of mysteries and secrets, danger and adventure, and choice and consequences.”
