John Wick creator writing Just Cause movie

Constantin Film has acquired the movie rights to the Just Cause game franchise.

The production company, which is responsible for the Resident Evil movie series, hopes to start a film franchise based on the open-world games developed by Avalanche Studios and published by Square Enix, Variety reports.

John Wick creator Derek Kolstad, who wrote the three John Wick films, has been hired to pen the script for the Just Cause movie, which is due to start filming in 2020. It will follow protagonist Rico Rodriguez as he races against time to foil a mercenary group called the Black Hand.

Constantin Film’s Robert Kulzer and Prime Universe Films’ Adrian Askarieh will produce the movie. The former’s a producer on the Resident Evil films, while the latter produced the Hitman movies.

Square Enix and Constantin’s Martin Moszkowicz will serve as executive producers.

The news comes shortly after Lionsgate announced plans to release John Wick 4 on May 21, 2021.

While video game movie hits are few and far between, Warner’s Pokemon: Detective Pikachu has performed strongly at the box office, grossing $300 million worldwide in its first two weeks.
