Respawn has made the next-gen console versions of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order available in a surprise release.

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of the action adventure game are available as a free upgrade to owners of the last-gen game, publisher EA announced on Friday. The next-gen version is also available both physically and digitally today for $40.

The next-gen version includes higher resolution textures and assets, 4K/HDR resolution, improved 60 FPS performance and significantly faster loading times, EA said.

Two graphics modes are available; Performance Mode On (1440p resolution at 60 FPS) and Performance Mode Off (4K resolution at 30 FPS), which marks an improvement on the modes added via a next-gen backwards compatibility optimisation update in January.

There is no graphical setting on Xbox Series S, as performance is locked at 1080p/60FPS.

On Xbox Series X|S, the upgraded version of the game will import cloud saves from the last-gen game automatically, EA said, whereas PS5 owners will need to ensure their save is on the PS5 console (via transfer or cloud storage) and manually import it via a start-up menu.

Significantly, EA is also offering an upgrade path for owners of the last-gen disc versions who own a discless next-gen console. The publisher has opened a submission form and will provide digital games to those who can prove their purchase of the disc version.

EA said in July 2020 that Jedi Fallen Order game had surpassed 10 million unique players.

On Friday it released updated figures, claiming that the game has now been “played” by over 20 million people across all consoles, platforms and subscription services.

EA has previously labelled Fallen Order “one of the breakout titles of the last several years” and CEO Andrew Wilson called it “the first title in an entirely new franchise”, suggesting a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel is on the cards.

Respawn, which is also behind the Titanfall and Apex Legends series, recently confirmed it is working on an original game project.
