It’s official: Gears of War E-Day is coming in October, and PS5 won’t be getting it
Xbox confirms reports that it’s no longer releasing the game on Sony’s console

Xbox has revealed the release date for Gears of War: E-Day, and confirmed that it will no longer be coming to PS5.
Today’s Xbox Games Showcase opened with gameplay from the upcoming game, along with confirmation that it will be released on October 6, and will be on Game Pass on day one.
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma also confirmed that the game will be an Xbox console exclusive, meaning it will be coming to PC, but not PS5 as previously announced.
“For the past 25 years, Xbox has delivered some of the greatest games of all time,” Sharma said during the Showcase. “Games that changed what was possible, games that brought players together and games that defined generations.
“Xbox was built on the spirit of creativity and heart, and as we kick off the show with Gears of War: E-Day, it’s only fitting that as we return to Xbox, we return to Gears.
“So today, we’re announcing that Gears of War: E-Day will be an Xbox console exclusive.”
The Xbox Games Showcase was then followed with a special Gears of War: E-Day Direct presentation, giving an extended look at the game’s campaign, combat and characters.
The game’s development team also explained on the official Xbox Wire blog how E-Day followed on from what they had called “five Gears in five years”, where a number of Gears of War titles including two mainline games, Gears Tactics and a mobile release had them recycling assets.
They explained that Gears of War: E-Day is the first game from The Coalition that doesn’t port any assets or animations from existing titles, with studio technical director Kate Rayner saying: “We literally rebuilt everything from scratch. Characters, enemies, weapons, animation, sound, the world itself.”
Rumours had been circling around Gears of War: E-Day after Giant Bomb journalist Jeff Grubb claimed on Saturday that the game was no longer coming to PlayStation.
“Gears of War: E-Day was gonna be on PS5. It’s not anymore” he said during a stream. “That just happened. That is a decision that just got made.”
Speculation about Gears of War: E-Day’s release date intensified when it was announced that the game would be sponsoring Triplemania, a two-day WWE wrestling event in collaboration with Mexican promotion AAA set to take place on September 11 and 13.
Given that WWE has often featured video game sponsorships and other tie-ins around their release dates, some took this news as a suggestion that Gears of War: E-Day was planned a release in or around September.
