Insomniac has reportedly been hacked, potentially exposing personal data and Wolverine details

Spider-Man developer Insomniac Games has reportedly been hit by a cyberattack that threatens to expose sensitive data about the company, its employees and its upcoming games.

As reported by Cyber Daily, ransomware group Rhysida has published data online which appears to corroborate its claim that it has successfully hacked the Sony-owned studio.

The gang’s proof-of-hack data is said to include an annotated screenshot from Insomniac’s upcoming Wolverine game, plus artwork that could reveal other Marvel characters set to feature in the PS5 title.

Update

Sony Interactive Entertainment said in a statement issued to VGC that it’s looking into reports that Insomniac has been hacked.

“We are aware of reports that Insomniac Games has been the victim of a cyber security attack,” the company said. “We are currently investigating this situation. We have no reason to believe that any other SIE or Sony divisions have been impacted.”

Update 2

The ransomware group that reportedly hacked Insomniac has seemingly released a huge number of stolen files.

The documents appear to include information and assets for the studio’s future projects, including its Wolverine game, a publishing agreement with Marvel that promises additional titles, and more.

It also appears to include employee passport scans, a personal document related to Spider-Man voice actor Yuri Lowenthal, internal emails and confidential documents.

The Rhysida gang is threatening to publish the stolen data in seven days but is also hosting an auction for it with a starting price of 50 Bitcoins (approximately $2 million).

“With just 7 days on the clock, seize the opportunity to bid on exclusive, unique, and impressive data,” it said.

“Open your wallets and be ready to buy exclusive data. We sell only to one hand, no reselling, you will be the only owner!”

VGC has contacted Sony for comment on this report.

In September, Sony said it launched an investigation after a ransomware group claimed to have breached the Japanese company’s systems and was threatening to sell a cache of allegedly stolen data.

Insomniac’s Wolverine game was announced in September 2021, as was its recently released Spider-Man 2, at which point it was claimed that the former was in “very early development”.

While it takes place in the same universe as the studio’s Spider-Man games, Wolverine is billed as a standalone title directed by Brian Horton and Cameron Christian, who were the creative leads on Miles Morales.

It’s previously been claimed that Sony is targeting either a fall 2024 or a 2025 release window for the game.
