id Software studio director Tim Willits has said he’d like to make a third game in the Rage series “as soon as possible”.

Rage 2 released on Xbox One, PS4 and PC this week, almost eight years after the original game hit shelves, and Willits is already hopeful players won’t have to wait so long for a third entry in the franchise.

Asked if he foresees future Rage titles, Willits told Hollywood Reporter: “I hope so. Yes, is the answer to that question. We’ve always loved this franchise because it’s such a fun setting.

“We can do what we want,” he added. “We were once talking about riding on giant cockroaches. What other game can you have a conversation where that’s a legitimate conversation you can have?! It’s a crazy, fun, exciting franchise and I hope we can make a third one as soon as possible.”

Speaking about the evolution of the series, Willits said “just about everything is different” in the second game. “Rage 2 delivers on the promise of the original Rage,” he claimed. “The first one was kind of an open world, but the technology wasn’t really open world. Here, we have true open world technology. We have true nonlinear storytelling.

“We have more vehicles, flying vehicles, tanks. We have a whole host of different abilities that allow you to do superhuman things like ground slam and shatter and double jump. And the arsenal of weapons is different from the original. The only thing that carries over from Rage is the setting and the world, but it truly stands apart as a separate game.”

VGC’s Rage 2 review scores the game 4/5, noting: “The slow start and uninspiring open world may damage the pace, but it’s a game that truly excels when you’re treading the line between being hopelessly outgunned and a super-powered Rambo.”

Earlier this week, publisher Bethesda detailed plans for Rage 2’s post-launch support, including free and paid DLC coming to the open-world shooter in 2019.
