Horizon release date update coming ‘very soon’ following ‘most-watched’ State of Play

Guerrilla Games has said it plans to provide an update on Horizon Forbidden West’s release date in the near future.

The studio revealed almost 14 minutes of Horizon Forbidden West gameplay on Thursday but there was no news about the game’s release date, leading to some speculation that it might not make its planned 2021 launch.

“We don’t have an exact release date just yet, but development is on track and we will have an update for you very soon”, Guerrilla tweeted following Thursday’s gameplay presentation.

According to independent market analyst Benji-Sales, the Horizon Forbidden West presentation quickly became the most watched State of Play broadcast focused on a standalone PlayStation Studios game.

“There have been State of Plays higher than this, but those were ones that featured multiple games / showcases,” he tweeted.

The Horizon Forbidden West gameplay reveal showed some of protagonist Aloy’s new moves, including the ability to use a grappling hook, a shield glider, and a diving mask for underwater sections.

Players can also override some of the game’s machines and mount them for faster travel or combat.

Guerrilla announced Horizon: Forbidden West for PS5 in June 2020 before confirming a PS4 version last September.

“Last year we revealed our ambitious new project and since then the team has continued to make great progress on the development of the game,” Horizon Forbidden West director Mathijs de Jonge said during Thursday’s presentation.

Prior to the sequel’s announcement, VGC revealed that PlayStation and Guerrilla are planning a Horizon Zero Dawn trilogy.

Horizon Forbidden West started development soon after the first game’s successful release and was originally planned for PS4 before focus shifted to Sony’s next-generation console, VGC’s sources said.
