Hideki Kamiya says the reaction to his Game Awards reveal made him cry

Okami director Hideki Kamiya has said that the fan reaction to the sequel’s announcement made him cry.

The director, who announced a sequel to the cult classic Okami at The Game Awards in December, revealed that he often watches fan-recorded reactions to the announcement.

“Even now, I look up the YouTube reactions to the announcements and looking at the people reacting to the video, and I find myself crying with the fans,” Kamiya told IGN. “And I’m just so happy to see that, oh, people are so happy to see this game come true.”

Kamiya left PlatinumGames in October 2023, saying he made the decision after “a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs” and suggested that he would continue to make games.

“Being there live within the audience and hearing people react there, and not only that, but also seeing people reacting on social channels after, there are so many people waiting for this title. And I was very surprised and happier than I thought I would be to hear people so looking forward to this game.”

Little is known about the sequel to Okami, other than it is being developed b y new studio Clovers, made up of Platinum veterans, and in collaboration with Capcom, the owners of the Okami license.

Kamiya recently said that he doesn’t want players to play the Wii version of the game, which was developed by US-based studio Ready at Dawn.
