Godfall studio Counterplay Games has reportedly ‘disbanded’
Layoffs have seemingly hit the maker of PS5 launch title Godfall
Godfall developer Counterplay Games has reportedly “disbanded.”
According to PlayStation Lifestyle, the claim was made on LinkedIn by an employee at NetEase studio Jackalyptic Games, which was reportedly working with Counterplay until recently.
“Over the past six months or so our project at Jackalyptic has been supercharged by the world-class devs at Counterplay Games,” they are said to have written.
“It’s impossible to overstate their impact. From the very first day they put their shoulders to the wheel like it was their baby.
“Unfortunately we were unable to continue our partnership into the new year and CPG was disbanded.
“I want to share the profiles of a few folks I worked with closely, strongly recommend, and hope to work with again as soon as possible.”
The LinkedIn post, which PlayStation Lifestyle viewed and verified, doesn’t confirm how many employees have been affected or if the studio has closed.
According to its website, Counterplay is a worldwide fully remote team with a satellite office located in Emeryville, California.
“We’re a 140-person team with the vision to craft games focused on high levels of personal mastery, drawing from our past experiences working on the Ratchet & Clank series, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Diablo III, Valorant, Gears 5, Guild Wars, Titanfall 2, Left 4 Dead, Halo 5, Battlefield 3, Bioshock Infinite, Injustice 2, Just Cause, Dragon Age 4, and Overwatch,” it reads.
Counterplay previously developed digital card game Duelyst, which was released in 2016 and taken offline in 2020.
Most recently it made Godfall, which was released in 2020 for PC and PS5 as a console launch exclusive, before making its way to PS4 and Xbox consoles over the next couple of years.
Back in 2022, Counterplay was hiring for an “unannounced co-operative action fantasy shooter”. It currently has no open positions, according to its website.
