God of War studio’s next game series could be set in a ‘fantasy-based world’
A new job listing is looking for a concept artist who specialises in fantasy art
A new job listing for Sony‘s Santa Monica Studio suggests its next game may have a fantasy setting.
The listing, looking for a Senior Character Concept Artist, states that the role is needed “for the development of a new unannounced title”.
Among the various responsibilities listed, one reads: “Develop and maintain strong creative and collaborative partnerships across subject areas to help further develop the in-game characters, visual language, and rule sets for fantasy-based worlds.”
Meanwhile, one of the job requirements involves “strong design skills with the ability to render realistic believable fantasy-based characters, creatures, and props using contemporary industry standard tools and techniques”.
The studio first announced in January that it was hiring an art director for an as-yet unannounced game, and last month job listings for more roles started to appear. This latest listing is the first to explicitly refer to a fantasy setting, however.
Santa Monica Studio is currently working on a new God of War, the follow-up to 2018’s PS4 exclusive action-adventure game.
Unlike previous entries in the long-running series, which were inspired by Greek mythology, God of War is loosely based on Norse mythology.
The series reboot was a critical and commercial success, winning multiple Game of the Year awards and selling over 10 million copies.
Its sequel was announced via a brief teaser last September for release on PS5 in 2021, although nothing more has been heard of the project since.
PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan refused to comment last year on whether God of War Ragnarök will be released for PS4 as well as PS5.
