It’s score is only topped by Elden Ring, according to review aggregation sites
God of War Ragnarök reviews have gone live and the PlayStation exclusive has been extremely well received by most critics.
At the time of publishing, the game has a score of 94 on review aggregation site Metacritic, making it the second-highest-rated new title of the year.
The game’s score is only bettered by fellow 2022 release Elden Ring. FromSoftware’s title has a Metascore of 96. Portal Companion Collection (96) and Persona 5 Royal (95) also place highly but are ports from previous years.

God of War Ragnarok is also publisher Sony’s highest-rated PS5 game, ahead of Demon’s Souls (92 on Metacritic).
On PlayStation 5, only Elden Ring has been rated higher than Sony Santa Monica’s sequel to date.
VGC’s 5-star God of War Ragnarök review labelled it one of the best PlayStation games ever.
“God of War Ragnarök is an incredibly special game,” we wrote. “It’s vital in a way few releases are. With captivating performances that carry an amazing story to a jaw-dropping final act, it’s a game that achieves everything it sets out to do to the absolute highest standard.”
God of War Ragnarök was originally planned for release last year, but Sony delayed it to 2022 to help developer Santa Monica Studio deliver “a top-quality game while maintaining the safety and wellbeing” of its team.
The God of War Ragnarök release date is November 9, but the PS5 and PS4 game is reportedly being sold early at some retailers, leading to significant story spoilers appearing online.
