God of War Ragnarök is PlayStation’s ‘fastest-selling first-party game ever’
Sony claims 5.1 million copies of the title were sold in its first week
Sony has claimed that God of War: Ragnarök is the fastest-selling first-party game in PlayStation history.
The company announced the record on the official PlayStation Twitter account, claiming that 5.1 million copies had been sold through in its debut week.
This makes it the fastest-selling first-party launch for Sony, and naturally makes it a “franchise record” for the God of War series too.
The last time Sony declared a game its “fastest-selling” at launch was The Last of Us Part 2, which it stated was the fastest-selling PS4 exclusive.
Sony announced in June 2020 that The Last of Us Part 2 had sold through more than 4 million copies in its first three days.
Before that, the record was held by Insomniac‘s Spider-Man, which was previously the fastest-selling first-party PS4 game with 3.3 million copies sold in its first three days.
And before that was the previous God of War title, which during its launch in April 2018 sold through 3.1 million copies.
It was stated earlier this month by charts firm GfK that Ragnarök was the fastest-selling God of War game in the UK, with its day one physical sales greater than the full week launch sales of every previous series entry.
Reporting its quarterly earnings this month, Sony said the God of War reboot in 2018 was one of the biggest titles ever released exclusively for PlayStation, with 23 million sales, and that it expected a similar performance from Ragnarök.
VGC’s God of War Ragnarök review labelled it one of the best PlayStation games ever.
“God of War Ragnarök is an incredibly special game,” we wrote. “It’s vital in a way few releases are. With captivating performances that carry an amazing story to a jaw-dropping final act, it’s a game that achieves everything it sets out to do to the absolute highest standard.”
