GameStop is holding its first PS5 in-store sale event in over a month on Saturday
Console bundles will be available at almost all of its 3,000+ stores
GameStop has confirmed that it will be selling PlayStation 5 consoles in stores this Saturday, May 28.
It’s the retailer’s first PS5 in-store sale event in over a month, following what has been a dry month for restocks of Sony’s console in the US.
Bundles will be available at all GameStop stores excluding those in Guam, Hawaii and Alaska.
“Visit your local GameStop for a chance to get one in person,” the retailer said. “Must be a PowerUp Rewards Pro Member, quantities will be limited.”
Starting at $14.99 per year, a PowerUp Rewards Pro membership includes loyalty rewards, extra trade in credit, a Game Informer subscription, plus access to exclusive offers and events.
During a PlayStation business briefing on Thursday, Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan claimed the company was experiencing “unprecedented demand” for PS5.
According to Sony, three US retailer events saw PS5s being sold at a rate of nearly 1,000 units per minute.
“The one area where we’ve fallen short of expectation is in our ability to supply the market with consoles,” Ryan said. “Covid-19 took its toll on our supply chain in 2021. The situation is starting to improve, although Covid-related uncertainties persist, specifically in the impact that ongoing lockdowns in Shanghai and Beijing might have, but things are definitely improving.
“Right now, we’re planning on a significant ramp up in PS5 production this year, allowing us to close the gap versus PS4 in its own third year, then to overtake PS4’s year four installed base within FY 2023 [the fiscal year ending on March 31, 2024].
“Beyond that, we’re planning for heavy further increases in console production, taking us to production levels that we’ve never achieved before.”
During the same presentation, Ryan said PlayStation’s recent acquisition spree is “not at all finished” and that Sony plans to have more than 20 games ready for the launch of PlayStation VR 2.
He also said PlayStation will release two unannounced live service games before April 2023, and that the company expects half of its annual releases to be on PC and mobile by 2025, by which time it will be splitting its investment in existing franchises and new IP evenly.
Despite some launch issues, Ryan also claimed the initial market reaction to the new PlayStation Plus service has been “extremely positive”.
Sony Pictures Entertainment also announced on Thursday that the company is working on adaptations of God of War, Horizon and Gran Turismo.
