Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 won’t be a PS6 exclusive, producer promises
Yoshinori Kitase says FF7 Part 3 has been in development for nine months
The producer of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy has assured players that the third part won’t be exclusive to PlayStation 6.
The first part of Final Fantasy 7 Remake was initially a PS4 exclusive, before coming to PS5 and PC more than a year later.
The second part, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, followed suit by initially releasing only on PS5 – the PC version is released today.
Because of the lenght of time required to develop each part, some have speculated that the as-yet untitled third part of the trilogy may continue the trend and may release exclusively on PS6.
However, series producer Yoshinori Kitase says players don’t have to worry about this being the case.
In an interview with Japanese publication 4Gamer, Kitase had it put to him by the interviewer that “for those who have played FF7 Remake on PS4 and FF7 Rebirth on PS5, I think there may be some concern that the third work will be for the next generation console”.
Kitase laughed, and replied: “No, you can rest assured about the next one.”
Kitase added that work on the third part started “right after Rebirth ended, in March-April 2024, so we’ve been developing it for about nine months already”.
It should be noted that Kitase’s comments don’tnecessarily mean Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 won’t be exclusive to PlayStation consoles when it’s released, simply that it won’t be exclusive to PS6.
The terms of Square Enix and Sony‘s exclusivity deal for the third part are unknown, as while the first two parts have been PlayStation exclusives, Square Enix has been making it clear in recent months that it’s adopting a multi-format release strategy for every game going forwards.
The director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth recently said he wants to see the Remake trilogy appearing on more platforms, and specifically praised Xbox. Previously, Final Fantasy producer Naoki Yoshida said he’d like to release Final Fantasy 16 on Xbox platforms.
After revealing in Spetember that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Final Fantasy 16 sales “did not meet expectations”, Square Enix announced plans to “shift to a multiplatform strategy”.
It remains to be seen, however, how this strategy affects Final Fantasy 7 Part 3, and whether an exclusivity deal had already been agreed with Sony beforehand.
