Far Cry 6 debuted atop the software chart while Nintendo Switch led hardware sales during a record October for US games industry sales.

Consumer spending across video game hardware, content and accessories hit $4.4 billion last month, which was up 16% compared to a year earlier, according to market research firm the NPD Group.

Far Cry 6, the latest entry in Ubisoft’s open-world FPS series, was October’s best-selling game, and is already the eighth best-selling title of 2021 to date, said NPD analyst Mat Piscatella.

Zombie shooter Back 4 Blood debuted in second place, ahead of fellow new entry Metroid Dread, which enjoyed the highest launch month sales of any franchise release in NPD tracked history.

After PS5 ended Switch’s 33-month run as the US market’s best-selling console in September, Nintendo’s platform returned to the top in October, in both unit and dollar sales, boosted by the launch of the new OLED model.

PS5 is still the top-selling console platform of 2021 year-to-date in dollars, while Switch is ahead in units.
