Epic Games is reportedly considering making a Fortnite film
As part of plans for a new entertainment division
Epic Games is reportedly considering making a Fortnite film.
According to The Information (paywall), Fortnite movie discussions form part of a wider conversation at Epic about the possibility of launching an entertainment division focused on scripted video programming.
The site’s sources claim Epic is exploring new ways to grow its brands at a time when its ambitions in the mobile games space are being restricted by its legal battles with Apple and Google.
Epic has hired several executives from Lucasfilm this year, including its new president of special projects, Jason McGatlin. He was formerly vice president of physical production at Lucasfilm and was executive producer of all the Star Wars films released by Disney.
Apple recently said it won’t consider letting Fortnite back on the App Store until its legal battle with Epic is complete, which might not be for several years.
Epic is appealing against the decision in its antitrust lawsuit against Apple, which last month saw the judge in the case rule against the Fortnite maker in nine of the 10 counts it had brought against the iPhone firm.
The legal battle began in August 2020 after Epic moved to circumvent Apple’s platform fees with a new direct payment option in Fortnite, leading to the game’s removal from the App Store and the termination of Epic’s developer account.
Epic is also suing Google over Fortnite’s removal from its Play store, but the case has yet to go to trial.
