Embracer has reportedly made layoffs at 3D Realms and Slipgate Ironworks
Danish studios acquired in 2021 are the latest to be hit by restructuring at Embracer
Embracer Group has reportedly made layoffs at 3D Realms and Slipgate Ironworks.
Scott Miller, who founded 3D Realms and now heads up indie publisher Apogee Entertainment, said he’d been told that at least half the developers at the Danish studios were being let go.
“Several sources have told me this bad news… Sorry to hear about another drop of the axe by Embracer Group, this time landing on Danish 3D Realms,” he said on X. “A lot of people, including core devs, will be looking for work asap.”
“More and more sources have told me at least half the company (Slipgate/3DR) is laid off,” he said in a follow-up post. “We’re looking at hiring at least 2-3.”
As spotted by Game Developer, Miller’s claim was corroborated by developer Michael Markie, who said that “for Christmas this year, I got laid off”.
Embracer, which acquired 3D Realms and Slipgate in 2021, announced in June that it was implementing a restructuring programme which would involve the closure of studios and the cancellation of some projects.
It has since shut studios like Saints Row developer Volition, Campfire Cabal and Free Radical Design, while others have reportedly been put up for sale, such as Borderlands maker Gearbox.
Embracer has made over 900 layoffs since the restructuring plan was put in motion, with the cuts also impacting studios including Crystal Dynamics, Beamdog, Zen Studios and Fishlabs.
