EA confirms Skate 4 is in development: ‘We’re back! We’re doing it!’

Electronic Arts has confirmed it’s started development on Skate 4.

The news was announced at the conclusion of the company’s EA Play Live showcase on Thursday, where series producer Chris ‘Cuz’ Parry said the new game was in the early stages of creation.

“We’re back! We’re doing it! Skate’s happening! We’re rolling! We’ve secretly got together, it’s the beginning… the skate evolution continues,” he said.

Game director Deran Chung added: “We’ve been waiting years, honestly, to make the right game, at the right time, with the right idea and we’re really, really pleased to say that we’re here. It is really early.”

Parry added that there was still “a long way to go” on the project and that this was “just the beginning.”

He said: “We want to thank you for your passion, your patience and all the support that you’ve shown to get us to this point… we cannot believe you commented this game into existence!”

The last Skate instalment, Skate 3, is now a decade old but continues to enjoy a cult following due to its unique control scheme and entertaining rag doll physics.

In 2014 Skate 3 appeared to enjoy a sales resurgence on the back of its growing popularity with influencers.

In 2016 it was added to Xbox One’s backwards compatibility roster, following what Xbox called a high number of requests from fans, and EA seemingly resurrected the game’s servers.

Following the announcement of Activision’s Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 & 2 last month, tens of thousands of users worldwide made mention of Skate 4 – an unannounced sequel – in their tweets, causing ‘Skate 4’ to trend worldwide.

Professional skateboarder Jason Dill had claimed at the time that publisher EA was not interested in creating a sequel.
