Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake dated, 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake announced

Square Enix has dated its Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, and announced Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake.

The former title, which was originally confirmed back in 2021, will be released on November 14, 2024.

It will be available for for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and Microsoft Store. Pre-orders for the game are now live.

During a Nintendo Direct presentation on Tuesday, Square Enix also announced Dragon Quest 1 & 2 HD-2D Remake, which is scheduled for release in 2025.

Chronologically, Dragon Quest 3 comes first in the Erdrick trilogy, followed by Dragon Quest 1 and Dragon Quest 2.

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake features

  • A fully modernized remake of the original: Stunning HD-2D visuals fuse pixel art with 3D graphics, bringing players into the world of Dragon Quest III like never before, along with an improved and modernized UI, and other quality of life improvements.
  • Traditional Dragon Quest style battles: A refined take on the classic turn-based battle system, featuring new animations, additional improvements such as an adjustable battle speed, an auto-battle setting, and more.
  • Immersive world: Deep exploration of a vast world map with an abundance of rich and captivating locations to discover, challenging players to overcome many unexpected encounters during the journey.
  • Experience a timeless musical score: An immersive, authentic, and diverse musical composition that captures the timeless essence and magic of the Dragon Quest universe.

HD-2D is the visual style used by Square Enix for a number of its recent RPGs, including the Octopath Traveler games, Triangle Strategy and its remake of Live A Live.

Dragon Quest games have sold over 82 million units worldwide since the first title released in 1986, according to Square Enix.

The last mainline entry in the series was Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which originally released for 3DS and PS4 in Japan in 2017 before making its way west and to other platforms.

Square Enix announced Dragon Quest XII during a 35th anniversary livestream in 2021.

Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate would introduce some changes to the franchise’s turn-based battle system, be darker in tone and have a simultaneous worldwide release, series creator Yuji Horii said at the time.
